Today, I’ll share about my first week in Bunbury.
Australian supermarkets
Firstly, I went to a supermarket a few times in the last week. At first, I was really surprised because it was so huge. For example, we could find so many kinds of apples, potatoes, meats, and so on. It was amazing and exciting. Also, the packages were big, too. For instance, I bought chicken breast, but the smallest package was 1.6kg. It was different from Japanese style! Also, I found milk not in a fridge area. In Japan, one liter milk is common, and it is in a fridge however, in Australia, it was one or two liter milk which could keep at ordinary temperature, and able to keep for a long time while it is unopened. I appreciated it because I don’t have to be concerned about “use by date” so often.
SIM card
Next, I’ll write about my SIM card. I had trouble activating in an e-SIM for 6 days. At first, I thought it would be solved if I waited few moments, however, it didn’t work. Then, I called Customer service call on Monday morning, but I could not catch machine announcements, and customer service operators, because they didn’t say it again or slowly when I asked. Also, Indian accent is different from Australian or American accents, so it was difficult and confusing for me. Then, I asked our village assistant to help me, and they called there twice. She told them to send a QR code again, and a physical SIM, too. Then it worked. I was relieved because I could finally call, send SMS, or use network without Wi-Fi. It was really learnable experience for me.
In rural area, sometimes they do not have branch shop, so I had to check which can talk about the problem face to face before.
Quiz night
Let’s move on to the “Quiz night” on Thursday. It was an event for us and our buddies to know each other’s country. I ate so many Australian snacks, and some of them were yummy. Some questions were a little bit difficult even though they were about Japan, so I really enjoyed it. Finally, our team got first prize, we were really happy about that. And next day we tried “Vegemite”. For me, I can eat it when someone give me, but I don’t want to eat or buy it for myself. It tasted salty, little bit bitter, and it was like traditional Chinese medicine for me.
Pools
On Friday, I played pools. I thought billiards and pools are the same game, but it was wrong. The number of balls are different! It was the first time for me, and it was difficult. I want to practice more and be a good player. One of my friends is a good player, and he said, “Do not grip the stick, just hold in lightly”. I tried to do that, but the more I wanted to hit the centre, the stronger I gripped. Finally, I could pocket two balls, but I have to practice more and more.
Cinema
On Saturday, I went to the city and saw a film. The title was “Bullet Train”, and it was a about mystery story in Japanese Shinkansen. It was interesting, but far from real Japan, so it was just like a fiction story. I wondered why those bullet trains are able to run such a sharp curve, and why there are no safety sensors. After seeing it, I walk around and bought some souvenirs. I bought some postcards for my Japanese friends, parents, and so on. I hope they will get them as soon as possible.
