Hello, I’d like to write about my first week in the Academic term. I have three courses; “Introductory Applied Mathematics”, “Social, Cultural and Media Studies”, and “Collaborative Design: Designing for Intercultural Experience”. Before this week, I saw a timetable, and I was glad that there are no classes on Friday and Monday. However, it means the classes are much more difficult than English classes.
Math Class
On Tuesday, I had a math class, and I was surprised at how difficult to understand mathematical terms in English. We only did easy calculations as a level between elementary school and high school, however, it was hard for me to make sense of what the problems said. I should have learned mathematical terms in Japan. For example, I learned the prefix, “hemi-” mean “half” on the day. To my shame, I did not understand the word, “hemispherical” on the handout at first.
Culture class
On Wednesday, I had a culture class and watch “Rabbit-Proof Fence”. It was a story of three Aboriginal girls and non-fiction. I felt sad because I learned how cruel people treat Aboriginal people in the past. The existence of major means there is a minority, too. I have to consider it when I make a big decision. In addition, I wondered about the population of Aboriginal people, and search for it, then it was surprising. Before searching, I guessed that it was around 30% because it is native people, however, the actual ratio was 3.3%. Now that you mention it, I don’t see Aboriginal people so often, but it was much smaller than I expect.

Collaborative Design class
On Thursday, I had a Collaborative Design class and sketched a playground. After sketching it, my professor said, “Is it possible to use children with disabilities?”. It was a blind spot for me, and he showed us an example of a park that was not for everyone in Bunbury. The park was filled with sand because of safety (probably), however, it was not kind for wheel-chair-users. Moreover, we also learned how different between “private design” and “public design”. Private design means, clients same as users, however public design’s clients and users are different. I realize that I’m not good at collaborative design, now, so, I am going to pay attention to it around me however small.
To sum up, all of the classes are completely different from previous English classes so far, but I am going to make effort to follow. See you next week!
